How to Check Out Wealth creation and Business people | MoneySmart (ASIC), Word of Mouth, Not Good Enough, The Checkout
[Vidcast] Wealth Creation Websites – Margaret Lomas, Destiny
Money Smart (Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC)
Word of Mouth They claim “is the No 1 business review site in Australia. It’s a user-generated directory where people share the experiences they have with businesses – both good and bad. Every day, Word of Mouth helps thousands of people find awesome businesses (and avoid dodgy operators). As well as helping consumers get better service, Word of Mouth also helps good businesses stand out from the crowd and be recognised for providing great service. We all know how powerful a recommendation is, but with our busy lives it’s sometimes hard to have that over-the-fence chat with our neighbours to find out where they get their hair cut or their car serviced. But who doesn’t want to hear about a great new restaurant that’s just opened, a fantastic plumber that won’t rip you off, or a dentist that makes the experience pleasant?”
Product Review They claim “is Australia’s first and most comprehensive consumer opinion site, online since May 2003. We provide a platform where people can rate and review services and products and the shops that sell them. It is consumer response – satisfied or not! On this site you will find real-life experiences and opinions voiced by Australians. We provide our users with the tools to easily find the items they are interested in, read what others have said about them and share their own experiences. We believe consumers shape and change products and are the driving force behind innovation. In addition to the obvious value provided to the consumer, our unbiased user experiences also provide manufacturers and retailers insight into consumer trends.”
Not Good Enough (NGE) They claim “Is an Australian Customer Complaints & Opinions website operating in Australia and New Zealand – and around the world… [it] is Australia’s largest and longest running online consumer advocacy website. … [with] over 54,000 members that discuss a range of products and services, including retailing, financial services, utilities, airlines, hospitality, telcos, as well as politics and social issues.”
The Checkout (ABC TV consumer affairs satirical show) has a list of resources for consumer complaints/organisations. If you have a bad consumer experience, you could always email your gripe or post a video there on F.U.Tube where you can post your own videos and complain about products.
Using Business Lists to Find 'Successful' People in Business, Management and Leadership | Are They Useful?
If you Google the ‘top 50 people in business, management and leadership’ you’ll get lists such as:
- The Australian’s Top 50
- A comprehensive list (mostly USA) of The Top 50 Leadership and Management Experts
In The Strange Nature of Lists, Chris Brogan (on the list) warns ‘try never to be swayed by lists of this nature… I’m still working hard and won’t stop until I’m on the list I most want to occupy: ‘People Who Equipped Me For Success’, and only you can write that list’.
Here are Steve Jobs’ insights on success form 3 perspectives, ‘Trust; Love and Loss; and Death’, Stanford Commencement Speech 2005.
Scamwatch (ACCC - Australian Competition and Consumer Commission)
Australian Skeptics | Science, Medicine and Alternative Medicines |Paranormal and pseudo-scientific claims
Science Based Medicine (UK) They claim ” Exploring issues and controversies in the relationship between science and medicine. Science-Based Medicine is dedicated to evaluating medical treatments and products of interest to the public in a scientific light, and promoting the highest standards and traditions of science in health care. Online information about alternative medicine is overwhelmingly credulous and uncritical, and even mainstream media and some medical schools have bought into the hype and failed to ask the hard questions.”
Australian Skeptics They say “is a loose confederation of groups across Australia that investigate paranormal and pseudo-scientific claims from a responsible scientific viewpoint. Most people are familiar with the more popular subjects that we investigate such as astrology, fortune telling, UFOs and crop circles; But did you know that we also investigate topics like fundamentalism, Feng Shui, subluxations and vitamin supplements? … Test your sceptical knowledge and see how many of the topics on our list are familiar to you.”

The individuals and companies you come across and see in the table below claim they’re experts in building your wealth. Many are not qualified financial planners. Under BiG’s Traffic Light™ rating system, they’re rated red, yellow or green. There are links to articles and anyone who has contrary ideas “Cons”, or others who support are agree with them “Pros” – people, forums, articles (any I can find). If I get any positive or negative information about them (send yours), they may be re-rated to a different colour.
Note: The ‘about’ column says “They/He/She claims” quoting their marketing blurb, because I’d hate to misrepresent or misquote their claims and unless I’ve explicitly done so, I don’t endorse them.
